Two Dead After Car Fleeing Police Strikes Taxi: State AG

A police encounter turned deadly on Sunday, Dec. 10 in Elizabeth, after a car fleeing officers crashed into a taxi, killing the driver and passenger, authorities said.

At 5:42 a.m., police responded to a report of gunfire near Fourth and Center Street, the state attorney general's office said. Police followed a vehicle of interest, which then collided with the taxi at Grand Street and Routes 1 and 9, the state attorney's general office said. The identities of the victims have not been released.

Two of the three occupants in the other vehicle were arrested and hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries. A third individual remains at-large, the state attorney general's office said.

Since the deaths occurred during an encounter with law enforcement, the state attorney general's office said it is leading an investigation. The Union County Prosecutor’s Office is also investigating the fatal crash.
